Dear Parents,
Today we began our unit we call, "Understanding Differences." We had a lengthy and deep discussion about people with special needs. All of the children in the class were extremely engaged and had many meaningful comments to offer. We watched two short videos. The first one was a short video of a week at Camp HASC (a summer sleepaway camp for children with special needs). The second one was my son's Bar Mitzvah montage. For homework, the students were asked to write down their thoughts and reflections about our discussion and what they saw on the videos. Here are some questions to help them with their writing reflection:
1. What did you learn today about people with differences?
2. What were you suprised to see or not to see in the videos?
3. What thoughts were you thinking while we were talking and watching the videos?
4. What did you already know before watching the videos?
5. Would you be interested in working at a camp like HASC? Why or why not?
6. Was anything difficult for you to watch?
7. Was anything difficult for you to hear?
8. Do you know of any people with special needs?
9. What else might you be interested to learn about on this topic?
10. Have your views about people with special needs changed in any way after today? If so, how?
If children are interested in seeing more videos of Camp HASC, they can google www.camphasc.org and search multimedia and then videos.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us!
Morah Michal and Morah Leah :)
